  • O/T Aircraft Names

    What propeller driven aircraft have a jet that has the same name? Here is some that I know so far.

    P-47 Thunderbolt->A-10 Thunderbolt II
    P-38 Lightning->F-35 Lightning II
    T-6 Texan->T-6 Texan II

      The T-6A/T-6B Texan II is a turboprop, so still technically a prop plane although it does burn JP-4/5.

      I was fortunate to fly the aircraft and must say it is a ball. 1100 shp turning a 700 lb 8 foot 4-bladed prop, on takeoff we ran the equivalent of a 10 second quarter-mile, in a 6300 lb aircraft.

      Funny story, I wrote the flight manual for the T-6A while I was at Beech. We wanted to honor the history of trainers and after the T-6A designation was announced we had to go all the way to SecNAV and SecAF to get permission, but we were able to put cartoons in the -1 (Flight Manual) for the first time since the TF-51. Hank Caruso (www.aerocatures.com) did the honors and he prepared a 'toon for the first page of each of the 7 primary chapters. It was a real treat and a great project.

          If the plane didn't have to make it into production:

          Fisher P-75 Eagle > McDoug F-15 Eagle
          Northrop P-61 Black Widow > Northrop YF-23 Black Widow II

            Don't forget about the English Electric Lightning.

            Globemaster I > Globemaster II > Globemaster III (F for creativity, A for consistency)

            DH 88 Comet > DH106 Comet (does it count?)

            DH 103 Hornet > F-18 Hornet

            Hawker Fury biplane > Hawker Fury/Sea Fury > NA FJ Fury

            I think there are many more. Some are names that were just reused but others (Thunderbolt, Lockheed Lightning, Globemaster, etc.) do have a history that makes sense.

              If anyone is ever in Corpus Christi, TX and gets a chance to tour the Lexington, seeing this one:

              in full size across the flight operations room wall is a real treat. The jokes and gags buried in the little details are hilarious.

                Okay, I'm gonna go out on a limb here and use "fortress" as the common denominator from prop to jet....

                B-17 Flying "Fortress" > B-29 Super "Fortress" > B-52 Strato "Fortress"

                    The Ford Corsair was actually an Edsel.

                      Sir,

                      I'm currently a student in the T-6 and I love those cartoons (girlfriend thinks they're "cute"...). I was poking around his website but didn't see them. Do you know how I could reach him to see if he would reproduce a few of them for me? (His website only lists a snail mail address, which I will use as a last resort.) If you could put me in touch with him via e-mail or telephone I would appreciate it. I'd love to hang a few on the wall. Thanks!

                        I can't believe it's been nearly twenty years since I've seen that one! It really made an impression on me. Poor little Buckeye!
