      Those are fantastic shots, Will!

        Re: OT USS IOWA

I've been in contact with the Pacific Battleship center and they are going to try to give me a 24 hr warning of when they are casting off, but no telling if they will give me enough time to pack up and run down there. Looks like the camera equipment will be living in the car for the next week.

Those night shots I took back in December. Thanks for the complements, I got some good stuff that night.

Love the photos. Looks like about the same location I mentioned too.

Looking forward to seeing your shots...have fun taking them!

            Re: OT USS IOWA

She's not leaving today either. Perhaps toward the end of the week.

My attempt to catch the eclipse at Beale was a no go, the girl at the gate didn't even know what an SR71 was (How do you get stationed at Beale and not know what an SR71 is?) Since I didn't have a military ID they turned me around at the gate. No big deal really, my lens filters are so dark I wouldn't have been able to see the SR in the picture anyway. My solution was lighting the afterburners and heading for Mt Lassen, by way of highway 32 out of Chico. No, not the fastest road out there but when you are driving an '88 BMW M3 with awesome suspension and tires, it becomes much faster. I made it to the summit with about half an hour to set up.

            Here are the results...
            Note the sunspots.

            Start of the eclipse

Check out the lens flare in this one.

Note the solar flare in the lower right portion of the sun.

Through a grove of trees, kinda eerie, but sort of cool.

There is a little snow up there...

                Re: OT USS IOWA

I'm still planning on trying to catch the Iowa leaving, but they still don't know when its going to happen. I'm also exploring a possibility of shooting it from the water. There were two ships that were selling tickets for Sunday, but since Sunday didn't happen, I don't know if they are going to reschedule for when the Iowa actually leaves. IF they do (big if) I might be able to get a ticket to get aboard either the Jeremiah O'Brian or another ship for the cruise. At this point I'm playing it by ear and taking the camera to work with me (In case they send me an email saying they are leaving in 3 hours or something.)

If I can't get aboard a boat, I think I'll shoot from the headlands from the same places I shot the pictures I posted earlier from.

                  Re: OT USS IOWA

Those were some awesome eclipse images. I have yet to see totality in person. I DID encounter an effect similar to that in your snow photo.

Here at home we did get 85% coverage, which still made for an interesting view. The reduction in daylight around the neighborhood was quite noticeable.

While standing outside using a home-made "pinhole camera" viewing box to observe the eclipse, we noticed strange shadows on the ground.

It turns out that every ray of light large and small projecting through nearby trees were acting like natural pinhole cameras, all projecting an image of the cresent-shaped eclipse

Here's a couple of photos I shot of the effect projected on a nearby wall. Their quality prove I need to spend more than a mere $200 on my next camera :

                  Close-up of above photo...

That first photo of the side of the house is surreal. The silhouette of the trees appears three dimensional. Nature is indeed a tough act to follow!
From what I've read and seen in photos, that same effect during a total eclipse borders on psychedelic. Can't wait for 2017!

Will, those shots of yours are great. Are you going to shoot the Venus transit in June?

I got the rings on the snow even though there were only evergreen trees at that elevation. I was pretty surprised by that.

I am looking forward to shooting hte Venus transit in June (what day was that?) I've got the equipment to shoot it, so I might as well use it.

As for the eclipse in 2017, anyone up for a road trip to Crater Lake?

June 5th is the day for the transit. The west coast won't be able to view the entire transit before the Sun sets. It will only be another 100+ years until it happens again.......no pressure.

Sounds like I'll have to head to the coast for this. Hopefully the fog will stay away till after the sun is well down. It could be a cool shot catching the setting sun over the water with Venus blocking some portion of the sun. Granted, it will be impossible to tell the water from space with a filter dark enough to see anything with, but I'll have to wait and see how things play out.

Still now word on when the Iowa is leaving.

I'm not sure on their criteria for such a big ship, but judging by the wave models I'm guessing no sooner than 4-5 days.

I'm sure the G.A. Johnson incident is a reminder not to rush this :-)

In the mid 60's the G.A. Johnson was being towed from SF to LA and the tow cables broke and she was washed up on the beach in Pacifica.

It was quite the festive scene the next few days with people boarding and claiming ownership. Of coursee my dad wouldn't let me climb on board :-(

I've seen many references to the loss of the Oklahoma when they tried to tow her from Pearl Harbor to SF for scrap and a few days out, it began to list, then sank. She was completely welded closed as well, Iowa is very much open now. They are still thinking late in the week.

Ok, the date and times are set.

To all our Pacific Battleship Center IOWA Battleship Supporters:

I’M VERY HAPPY TO SAY THE IOWA BATTLESHIP WILL FINALLY BE ON HER WAY THIS SATURDAY MAY 26TH. BELOW IS THE SCHEDULE
Update: USS IOWA will be departing the Port of Richmond, CA on Saturday, May 26 at 1100. IOWA is expected to be transiting under the Golden Gate Bridge on its 75th anniversary between 1400 and 1500 (2:00pm and 3:00pm). If you will be on a small boat, we encourage you to watch ship and boat traffic closely and please be safe!
THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR SUPPORT AND FOR THOSE WHO VISITED US IN RICHMOND, WE HOPE YOU WILL VISIT US IN THE PORT OF LOS ANGELES; THE GRAND OPENING IS STILL SCHEDULED FOR JULY 7TH.

I'll be in the headlands with the camera early. There is a chance that the Jeremiah O'Brian will be escorting her out as they are planning on doing a cruise on Saturday for the 75th Anniversary of the Golden Gate bridge. While I think it would be cool to shoot from the J.O.B., I think the pics will be better from the headlands. Its hard to say however. It would be pretty cool to shoot the last battleship on the open ocean from the last Victory ship that is still seaworthy.
