It seems like a reasonably factual article. I do seem to recall reading that Voodoo Chile had a single elevator trim tab rather than the stock two as mentioned in the article. Perhaps the author had access to different information.

Hmmm, I thought the person who installed the telemetry system reported here on AAFO that it only recorded up to 6Gs, and the 11G number was just a rumor. Also, the author ignores Matt Jackson's stated theory about a possible CG issue being a culprit. I'm not sure if I'm particularly impressed with this analysis.

People are obviously looking for any information that they can grab, even if from an article or word of mouth. There is a lot of misinformation going around and unfortunately whatever people can grab will be used. In this type of investigation, the facts will likely not be released from the NTSB until their investigation is complete and a report put out.

The system in GG only was designed to measure to 8g's.

All true. Immediately after posting an account for family and friends, I started second guessing my own speculations and conclusions. Guess the best thing is to continue laying low and wait for the NTSB report.

This keeps coming up so here are a couple of photographs I took after Voodoo Chile's safe return to the ramp. I remember Bob was very amped up as you might expect and talking a mile a minute.

The first shot is of Bob talking with some others you may recognize.

The second is of Voodoo's elevator. As you can see, there are two trim tabs, although one is missing. The other thing to note is that the two elevators are pointing in different directions; one up and the other down. Fortunately one elevator was still linked to the stick allowing for a safe landing. The other was just flapping in the breeze as the torque tube that normally connects the two had snapped.

As I recall, Bob said he blacked out and when he came too, his head was under the instrument panel. The G meter was pegged at 11. The airplane was flying straight and level and initially felt just fine. He even started to descend back onto the race course until he began to feel the elevator flutter. At that point he called a mayday and landed.

That's got to be more excitement than anyone wants.
