  • The only finnish FAI record braker ..

This little under 500 kg Mtow plane in 1957 made an endurance record that was not beaten until 1988 with a Vari-Eze !

It was a distance flight from Turku Finland to Madrid spain 2854 km.

Now mr. Ebneter beat it few years ago.

I am after the Lischak record now.

There is a pic of the making the fastest under 300 kg aeroplane CEA-308 !

That last pic is a construction photo of the Brazillion CEA-308 designed by Paulo Iscold and build by a group of aerospace engineering students. It has set a bunch of speed records in class. They have also built a nice competition aerobatic monoplane, and are now building an aircraft to race in sport class.

        Hello FlyKid Chris !

I started about 4,2 years ago a discussion ( at local site ) why there isn't a moderately priced finnish aviation product at the market that would feature plywood as a material.

I have tried to turn every stone and bent over backwards to design one. I seemed to have reached something since test pilot ( my old friend from already 1976 ) says it looks goods and has helped me in areas that I know very little about.

It is in funding search phase...and plans for a model are on a way. I'd really like to publish it and all, but the design really has several structural and aerodynamical features never used in same fashion before in a same aeroplane.

One thing to test is the brand new airfoil that I created with a XFRL5 program ( X-foil based )..that seem to beat the iconic Wortmann fx 63-137 ( designed in the sixties for HPA planes ) foil in all respects....more lift at less drag and Cm. It also allows the wing to be very lite since it is 17% thick.

Regular tank would allow it to fly 10 hours..but since the plane is really small it can target the microlite records. The problem is that it is pretty small and slow..to beat Ebeneter record may be simply impossible since no one can stay awake that long as this plane would require. If lucky and all things go as planned it might beat Lischak record. Wing tanks would triple or quadruble the flying time...at 72 mph that seems to be pretty optimal for the least fuel burn.

It has only 6,2 meter span and measures 3.74 meters in lenght with 5 m2 wing area. Estimated ( only estimate...weight calculations are on the way ) empty weight is about 50 kilos...whing Ding II beats it by 5 kilos but this has closed cockpit and all moving tail feathers and 8 degs sweep on the wing. I have estimated ( as Bruce Carmichael for AR-5 ) the drag to be somewhere 0.8 sq ft area ( FPEA ) maybe even 0.7. Compared to VMaxProbe about double still...but extremely low.

No the CEA-308 is the brasilians made under 300 kilos record setter. My design is still under wraps.

          That is correct Race5 !

Paulo Iscold's design below is 205 kilos empty and he said it could be made today into 180 kg.

Here is more about Paulo's design; http://www.sportaviationonline.org/s...104?pg=83#pg83

My design is really in very different class...in the peanut gallery.

It has 3,5 feet less length...and 4 sq ft more wing area than CEA-308.

This design in my drawing board has some aviation grade plywood, but lotsa foam too...and GF and CF.

It seem to pay of if lightness and aesy building with stiff structure is goal..at moderatly low speed.

I have edited the Paulo Iscold CEA-308 pics...what was I thinking...I just dig his foam/plywood/GF design too much !

Estimate for the wing weight is there at my blog.

Here is one detail that may intrest you.

The Chilton DW-1 style LG system...just 50% of its thickness.

There are about 9 different aspects that I figure will save in drag/weight/efficiency in order to do few serious records.

This sports also the slow speed high lift foil.

Name is now IO after the 4th moon of the Jupiter !
