I dont think the compounded engine was much fun to work on, but its fuel economy was interesting....In aircraft mechanics school in the 1970s, they told us that airlines would take their old DC-7s, put floats on them and use them to train "Flight Attendants" to egress from a ditched airliner....then, when the trainning was over, they would sink the planes...dont know if that was true or not but their point was the engines were very expensive to maintain and no one wanted them when the jet age appeared.....
