What is the story on the P-40B? I don't think I have seen it before. Well, maybe I have seen parts of it. Is it (or pieces of it) from the P-40 project at Torrance during the 90s? Absolutely beautiful! I'm sure you have more pics of it, right Phred?
It's a drone from Holloman AFB, as signified by the HD on the tail...or I could be completely wrong.
It was a drone, but not sure which base it came from. The only civilian owned F-4 is based in Houston TX and rarely ventures out far from home. I think it's last far off show was Thunder Over Michigan a few years back.
The grace and precision of the Horsemen with Mr. Hinton in the P-38 was something to witness. My friend's comment was "Its like watching Lefty only with two Mustangs attached. Does it get any better?"
My same thoughts on Mr. Tucker. After all of these years watching him, Sunday's routine made me wonder how he could possibly be getting better.
The aircraft presentation of this show makes it a "don't miss a year" show for me.

I understand that the F-4 is still under the control of the Air Force for the heritage flight purposes. I know the past few times I saw it while in Washington State, it was flown by active duty Air Force Lt. Col's.
My guess is that as the years go by, the number of aircraft from the Korean and Vietnam wars may start hitting the skies for the vets of those periods in history.
The photo of the P-40 really caught my eye. I would love to see one in the straight metal with the prototype markings hit the skies. The only one I remember seeing in that scheme was the P-51A a few years back.
Can someone out there tell me exactly what the "warning buzzer" to the left and rear of the pilot "warned" about?

What? No thanks for the dirty F-4? Sheesh!
Oh, the P-40. Here you go a quick walk-around, clutter and all...
It was another good year at Chino, though maybe down a bit on airplanes. I heard there was record attendance for the show though so I hope that means good things for PoF. The P-40B would have been worth the drive even if nothing else had shown up for the show! From what I've gathered it is being restored by Matt Nightengale and is owned by The Fighter Collection. Matt also had a hand in TFC's other P-40B as well as their Hawk 75 so he certainly has gained some extensive experience on the early Curtiss Hawks. The polished P-40B in formation with the Red Bull P-38 is something I look forward to with much anticipation! My other thoughts on this year's show:
- The Horsemen routine was spectacular and had anybody asked me just a few years ago if I thought I would ever see a three-ship warbird aerobatic routine with a P-38 up front I probably would have laughed at them.
- Dennis Sanders and "Argonaught" looked as good as ever but the awesome R-3350 sound is gone from the routine. Not that I don't like the noise the 2800 makes but it just ain't the same.
- I don't think anything looks and sounds any better than a Tigercat!
- It was really fantastic to see the Mk.XIV Spitty again after all these years and brought back some really good memories of Chino shows gone by.
- I really don't care if I ever see another routine by Clay Lacey and the Lear. Sorry but it is about as exciting to me as watching grass grow.
- Last, but not least, I very rarely get any enjoyment from watching another aerobatic routine with a Pitts/Extra/Zlin/Yak/etc. However, Sean Tucker is certainly not just "another aerobatic routine"! Having never seen Mr. Tucker perform before my mind was well and truly blown away with his show.
What are the odds of it being lured up to Reno? That would be sweet. Who cares if its only a Bronze contender, it would be awesome to see. I'll be up front, I've never seen a Spitfire fly in person, and I'd love to see one some day. One rounding the pylons, double bonus.

I could be wrong on this but I thought Mr. Price raced this bird at Phoenix one year. I know they raced the Mk.IX but I can't remember if the Mk.XIV was on the ramp that year as well or not.

I had the privilege of meeting Sean D. Tucker several years ago...and quite honestly, in this day and age of 'cookie cutter' aerobatic routines, he is the one and only act I will stop and put down whatever I'm doing and watch.
Cool factoid about him...he was prone to violent air sickness, so he taught himself aerobatics as a way to acclimate his body to flying. I'd say he did pretty darn well.
