Sorry guys. I want to know the true speed of the aircraft. The new method delivers. Dago & Bear had already gone 500... My point-to-point record was between CVG and LAL VORs, but Atlanta Center vectored me all over the place, so I actually flew faster than 206.54 MPH. But how much? After all that wrench turning, I want to know. Flame on you crazy diamond! Peas

We are in the final stages of resolving the issues with the forums move to the new location. After talking with tech support, the only solution was to send him a copy of all the images. This will take time - but we know the fix SO it's only a matter of time now.

RARA Race Course Distance Measurement Method Changed and Used in 2003

Insantaneous speed

Fellow debaters , The new method might be closer, but it still doesn't reflect the actual course flown. Each aircraft flys a different course on every lap.
At any one time one could consult the air speed indicator and correct for atmospheric conditions. Perhaps one could read that off the guage by reviewing a video taken over the pilot's sholder. if one took enough readings you could approximate reality and average to get a speed. Using this method it might turn out that an aircraft flying a bigger course and finishing second, actually flew faster.
So what's the point. during a single race you know who was fastest because they crossed the finish line first, unless anyone is suggesting we change that as well. The point is to have some method of comparing speeds between different races. The recent change in measurement defeats that.
Offical speed records are measured in a straight line to avoid these complications.

I can't believe that nobody has bothered to figure the heat-rise correction into the equation either. At 500 mph the friction of the air going across the pitot tube is going to create a lot of heat, therefore, the air 'inside' the pitot tube is going to be warmer, and as such, thinner, than the outside air. This will undoubtedly give a false indicated air speed higher than the 'acutal' indicated air speed. (Not to be confused with the calibrated air speed, or ground speed, mind you.)
Hasn't this subject been beat to death enough?

I heard that at the Athen's Olympics this year they are going to use a moving start to the 100 M sprint. This way we get rid of that troublesome start that slows all the runners down and we will see the speeds that they are truly capable of. The IOC has had complaints from many spectators and past champions about this break from tradition but why would you listen to the people that make your event viable.

The change of the air raceing course distances on the Stead Airport is a bad idea. The change further isolates RARA from any recognized national or international standard. Any air racing event that would ever be recognized by the NAA or FAI, the Reno course distance would be changed back to the pre 2003 distances.

I don't think that the rumor of a standing start is credible, though: Likelihood of too much 'It' hitting too many 'Fans'.

No, but I think if enough people complain about it there will be a change made. The problem is that the old way is the way it has been for so long and should stay that way. The other side is that the new way shows the true speed. A big decision but I say the old way.
