Race photos on Flickr

Over the last few years the San Diego Air & Space Museum has been scanning and posting their archives on Flickr. If you know how to search and manipulate, there are some real gems in there, including a nice little cache featuring the United States Cup 1000 mile race at Brown Field in 1971. Fantastic color photos of Super Snoopy, Miss Merced, Phoenix I with the drop tanks...and this little gem of Mike Geren in the Bearcat and Darryl Greenamyer in Dave Zeuschel's Mustang.

Later in this race Geren would perish when the motor caught fire and instead of trying to get out of the plane he attempted to save it and land.

No photographers are listed, just that they are property of the SDASM Archive.

Some more photos off the Flickr/SDASMArchive link (photographer unknown) from the 1971 U.S. Cup 1000 mile race in San Diego:

1. Clay Lacy in Allen Paulson's DC-7B Super Snoopy

2. Bob Love in Jerry Brassfield's "Golden Products"-sponsored P-51. Bob would later purchase this airframe and run it as the #97 Oogahonk Special, and eventually his all-white Jolly Roger/Bernie's Bo.

3. Gene Akers in the F4U-4 (the ex-Lancer Two) and Gary Levitz (or relief pilot Vernon Thorpe) in the P-38 Double Trouble. Note Fish Salmon's Lockheed Connie racer "Red Baron" in the background.

4. Leo "Baron" Volkmer's TBM "Wild Turkey"....yes, they actually raced at TBM Avenger at this race. Dropped out after the 13th lap.

5. Bill Jackson in Sherm Cooper's P-51.

6. Lyle Shelton in the F8F Phoenix I. Note the first attempt at the low-profile canopy. The Skyraider drop tanks presented a real problem for Lyle, as he had qualified without them, but during the race they threw the plane WAY out of c.g. and the plane was on the edge of uncontrollable pulling g's on the course. Note Larry Haven's in the P-63 Crazyhorse in the course in the background.

Question on the aft or out of CG on a race plane. I don't know the exact terminology but say a plane is a "little" or 50lbs aft CG, does it increse relative to the amoutn of Gs put on the plane, so at 2G it would be a "little more" or 200lbs etc. I would impagine if this is the case, at heavy Gloading that you could get into a situation where you could be unrecoverable? If this is the case, then what?

They do. It's like one flyby in a B-1, B-52, or B-2. Burns about the same amount of fuel as that entire photo.

The CG doesn't change during the turn when pulling more G (think of it like this: one little kid balancing on each end of a teeter-totter balance just as well as two on each end).

Moving the CG aft has two important effects though.

First, it affects how much push or pull force is needed to hold a given airspeed. A stable airplane (CG forward) needs pull force to slow down, and push force to speed up from a trimmed speed. This makes speed easy to control. As the CG moves aft, the situation can reverse and speed control becomes more of a chore.

The other effect is how much force it takes to actually pull Gs. The more forward the CG, the harder you have to pull for each additional G. The further aft, the easier it is to pull G, and the harder it is to control the amount of G. Too far aft, and it's not possible to control the airplane at all.
