Hi !
A dream flight in the magnificent P51 Mustang to end my 2007 season at Santa Rosa. From the OV10 Bronco to the P51 Mustang...it's fun to be a Flying Cowboy...
The P51 was a dual seater; yep... I got had a stick/rudder in the back...and yep I flew it! Not easy to get seated in the back for a big guy but nothing could have stopped me there. Magical sound of the engine, tricky Taxi and POWER!!! on take off...wow!!! you're in the air before you can think...Then a quite docile beast, quick to respond and a fast mover ...250...350...400 mph..just like that... Some aerobatics to realize how easy to fly when you have such a powerful engine pulling you in the air. To keep the ball centered takes some practice though.
Slalom around the clouds and then we returned. Gear/flaps...115 mph on final... a little bounce on the deck and ...that's it...What a great ride!
Thanks to the Pilot Will Whiteside who is flying a superb Yak 11 with a mighty R2000 engine at the Reno Air Races.
Will gave me and friends a tour around the "Steadfast" (the Yak's nickname). Very impressive. Passionate and gifted aviator, keep an eye on this guy... His name will show up at Reno, for sure! In comparison he told me the Yak was lighter at the controls than the P51; must be fun to fly too... These airplanes have a soul.
I was born too late...
Will, I'll race you someday...
Take care,
Jerome
