A quick look at Voodoo, right before the Reno Air Race Associations Pylon School. You will see a quick flight and hear from Voodoo's pilots. Yes, I said pilo...
Way different in handling.
Voodoo loves the speed. The more speed the more solid it feels.
It is a really solid airplane to begin with. Realize that the NAP51D
is so well executed originally that once you turn it into a racer by
removing the things that make it easier to handle by a low time combat
pilot that it really is a perfect race platform. Not to say better or
equal airframes do not exist. I just haven't experienced a speed in
which I felt Voodoo was resisting. I can see why so much effort has
gone into Mustang development since they started racing them. It's
really a shame it's so hard to keep a Merlin happy at race power.
SteadFast on the other hand was built on a low altitude light weight
fighter design unlike a P51. It was modded from that original fighter
into a trainer and since then into an air racer. It's a great little
light weight airplane and pretty studly ride but once you try to push
it up above 450Mph TAS you realize that you'd rather have your buddy
tell you about doing it instead of the other way around. Its fine and
comfortable at the higher speeds but you know you are there. We have
put alot of effort into making SteadFast a really nice flying and
working airplane but it will never capture my heart like the P51 or a
Fury has.
Congrats on your new venture and best of luck to you. The little Murray is a big fan of #5 (good to be young enough to have a favorite number) and given how cool you have been to our family over the past few years you will have one fan for sure
