I think I made this mistake last year. Are they not allowed to go back out and attempt to better their time once per day?

I don't think there's a huge reason for them to try and post a better time during qualifying. It's not like auto racing where track position or pole position is critical since the planes can pass on the high side and still take the same line.

Qualifying is probably more to set pairings, and less to set 'position' on the track so to speak.

Dont count out quals!!! They are very important, as we have seen the year before last. If the weather or wind picks up, and they dont fly the gold on Sunday, the top qualifier gets 1st.

So yeah they are important. The question is, important enough to go back out and re qual with a faster speed? History says no. Maybe if the purse was big enough, then we would see that change.
