Here's a post from Radio Control Soaring Exchange :

    From: "Nathan Woods" <nathan@sloperacing.com>

Subject: New DS world records: 301 mph (Unlimited) and 211 mph (60")
    Message-ID: <42FD967B00016605@mta8.wss.scd.yahoo.com>

I thought I would update all you thermal guys with some interesting news
from the sloping world. What follows is direct from Joe Zepeda, a Parker=

    Mtn local and serious DS'er:
    ---------------------------------
    Dateline 10/05/05:
What an amazing day... showed up at about 9-9:30am thinking i would
be the first up there and Kyle was there already with a radio in one
hand and a silly grin asking me to Radar for him.... so i grabbed my
    camera/tripod and the radar gun...

INSANE passes chillin' in the 260's with a high of 295mph... he
then lands and i throw out my carbon Mini blade... tons of 170-180's
and a high of 192mph... i land and then the SD crew shows up, all
giddy and assembling their planes like its the end of the world...

Gary Legerton sets a new 60" Record of 211mph with the Carbon Bird
(www.soaringusa.com), jason lilly is relaxing in the 170's with a 2m
blade just warming up, and Bill Lamping with a mini blade problem
(servo) so no warmup plane leaves him with ONLY his 2m Extreme that
    he purchased from Kyle paulson....

Joe Manor shows up with his Scratchbuilt 80" Dynamic and pulls off a
    blistering 217 or 218mph (i think its 218 he remembers 217) its
clearly on film and i will be reviewing it soon to post online...
    WAY TO GO JOE!!!!!!!!!!

Pat Bowman and Ryan Hevner were the only ones with Foam... and they
werent afraid to PUSH them to the max... Bowman with tired servo's
pulls off a 182mph and several 170's... but here comes big bad
RYAN... all up to you man.... INSANELY pulls off TONS of 180-190
passes with a High of 201mph!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! your freakin
    amazing bro!!!!!!!!!

    Killed planes from today include-
My 60" Carbon Mini Blade (let off the stick and it tucked and met
the earth at a high rate of speed)
Gary Legerton's 2m extreme (too low, caught a tip and sent 1 wing
    and fuse to palmdale)
Gary Legerton's 8 FOOT Carbon Bluto... tail went at 160 somthing,
whole plane then fluttered and SNAPPED (killer vid for that one)
Jason Lilly- FAST figure 8 in the 170 range too low and caught a tip
    and killed the plane...

no other records were taken... just plane records... from today

World Record- Kyle Paulson at 301mph
60" World Record- Gary Legerton at 211mph
Not foam record but JW record- Ryan Haevner at 201mph
Carbon Bird record- Gary legerton at 211 (same as 60" record)
Carbon Mini Blade record- JOe Zepeda at 197mph
MAYBE the fastest Scratch built 1Off???- Joe Manor at 217-218mph
    (will confirm shortly)

but man, what a great day, and a HUGE crowd... and just think its
only like the first 2 weeks into Santa Ana's! we have MONTHS left
and i cant wait to see more records broken.... well i gotta go, have
to call Bowman for a new JW!

all with CLEAR legit video un-edited with the radar gun in front of
the camera with speeds being called out...

also want to publicly apologize to the Norcal guys for not believing
them their Super-Tron went 207mph (current foam record) i guess it
is possible and im sure you guys will hold that record for some
    time...

    Joe Z.

          Here is a video to a F3D speedsters. They only go 370 km/h ( 200 mph ).

Pretty fast looking to me though !

Simple question...how can the unmotorized gliders go that fast ?

I am not saying they wouldn't..I'd just like to know the physics involved here !

                Here's a neat diagram:

What this does not show is that there is almost always a rotor present sending wind uphill on the backside. It is lower velocity, but when "in the groove", the plane is in accelerated air on the top and bottom of the DS circuit. When doing the "walk of shame", i.e., retrieving your crashed bird from down slope, you can feel the air coming back up the slope on the downwind side of the crest. Thus, train with foam (like the Bat), and go for the big numbers with glass.

When I blew up my Vortex (60" all carbon slope racer) I had to go 500' down to retrieve it. I was on the lookout for Mojave Greens! Here's the view from the bottom:

In that view from the bottom pic is that a full size bird that met her demise there?

Juke is F3D racing pretty big over there? I have raced a little QM40 over here, but interest in R/C racing as a whole is going down hill fast.

                      Peashooter,

Thanks for the links. DS is growing here too.

                      Race5,

I would not say big. Two entries in the big games. Few competetive racers yes ( acquired from the states ).

1/12 scale air combat is pretty big..since it is accessible with lot less money.

                      rgds,

There are two cars that were pushed over the edge at some point a while back (50s maybe?). My failed-wing Vortex landed just below them.

                          Peashooter,

What would be the TAS of the soarer and the wind speed ( coming from top of the ridge ) ?

The speeds posted as "records" are measured by radar guns, thus they are speeds over the ground. TAS will vary depending upon where the model is in the circuit. If the radar speed coming uphill is 300 mph and the sheer wind speed the model enters at the crest of the hill is 30 mph, then the resultant TAS is 330 mph. The pilot takes advantage of this new "energy" by turning abruptly back downhill and benefiting from the acceleration of the faster relative wind. Aggressive DS turns are estiamted at 50Gs. Natural selection plays an important role in DS model specs!

Almost beyond comprehension..330 TAS with a small glider.

                              Thanks Peashooter !
