name: Don Berliner
date: 4/4/01
email:
location: USA
nominee: Bill Stead

nomination: Without his intelligent, businesslike organization of the first Reno Air Races, there would be no air racing in the United States today. Most of the promoters who followed in his wake were utterly incapable of doing original work, or placing the needs of the sport above their own.

name: Leon M. Ellis
date: 04/01/01
email: lellis2036@aol.com
location: Idaho
nominee: Erin Rheinschild

nomination: Erin Rheinschild is the perfect candidate. She is the only woman to fly in the unlimited classification of air racing. She won the Bronze title at Reno in 1990. She continues to fly as a Captain with United Airlines. It is only fair and appropriate to nominate her for the Air Racing Hall of Fame. There may never be another female pilot as capable and deserving.

name: Dan Wilson
date: 3`/30/01
email: daniel.wilson@worldnet.att.net

date: 02/14/01
email: Chuck12@concentric.net
location: California-Australia-Europe
nominee: Bill de Stephanie and STREGA

nomination: Knowing Bill not only professionally but personally I believe the Hall of Fame would be remiss without his name and many contributions. He and his crew made the airshows at Shafter the best in California. His competiveness made any Race he was in an edge of the seat race. He is a true advocate of the air racing fraternity and definately has my vote.

name: Dick Barker

email:
location: Florida
nominee: Steve Wittman

nomination: Wittman was a legendary figure in the early Clevelandand Miami Air Races. He built and raced the famous"CHIEF OSHKOSH" in the thirties. He holds over thirtyaviation patents one of which is the spring landinggear on Cessna 140 150 152 170 172 180 aircraft

name: George Demmy
date: 01/12/01
email: demmyrig@worldnet.att.net
location: Pensacola, Florida
nominee: Cook Cleland

nomination: I'm not an air race fan and in searching for a frame of reference from "my world", perhaps the best I can come up with is: If air racing had a John Madden, then Cook Cleland would be the all time captain of the All Madden Team. I obviously know a different Cook from many of you. He is in failing health and has recently lost a leg to diabetes. Cook is never without a handful of business card size cards with all manner of printed and graphic "stuff", usually risque, but always well received by all. His mind is slipping away, along with his body, but I am pleased to report that his recollections of his military exploits AND his adventures as an air racer are vivid and a treasure to hear.

name: Bob Poortman
date: 11/08/00
email: riskybiz2k@yahoo.com
location: So. Cal.
nominee: Erin Rheinschild

nomination: Erin is a fine pilot and the first woman to qualify in the unlimiteds at reno. I would also like to second Chris's nomination of Bill Rheinschild. He is a great asset to the sport and he and Erin make a great team.

name: Wayne Sagar
date: 10/19/00
email: wsagar@aafo.com
location: Pacific North West
nominee: Bill Kerchenfaut

nomination: As the winningest crew chief in the sport of Air Racing and a great man in his own right. I respectfully submit Bill "Kerch" Kerchenfaut for candidate in the Hall of Fame...

He raced but did not finish in 1948.Cook Cleland is a pilot exceptional. He is a hero of both World War II and Korean War. He is an Ace from World War II which includes sinking a Japanese Aircraft Carrier. He was aboard the USS Wasp when the Japanese sunk that carrier. In turn, he sunk a Japanese carrier later when he was flying with Bombing Squadron 16 from on board the USS Lexington.Cook Cleland will be 84 years of age in December 2000. He is most deserving of a prominent place in the Hall Of Fame.

nominee: Clay Lacy

nomination: I'm proud to say I have been a friend of Clay Lacy for over 50 years. It would be hard to find an area of flying that he has not been part of, including unlimited air racing. Who can forget Snoopys #64 Purple P51. Selection of Clay would elevate the HAll Of F

He is quick with a smile and a joke, and always has time for the children that come to meet him in the pits. He has shared his love of the sport with his son's, and his close friends. He raced two Unlimiteds for many years - Race 15 & 16, Furias and Baby Gorilla. Lloyd was a world renowned Air Racer and at Reno. He was well liked, and was always willing to help a competitor - whether it be with Advice, acft parts, or any other thing needed to continue to compete. He was always thinking of the safety of everyone, and was many times very verbal about it. He was never one to miss the opportunity to praise OR curse other pilots about problems concerning safety or flying. He was always visible at Reno, and a very staunch supporter of Air Racing throughout the years. name: Hayden Himburg
date: 12/08/80
email: Spitfire_38@hotmail.com
location: New Zealand
nominee: Howie Keefe

nomination: Howie Brought to the sport an unforgetable and beautiful aircraft in Miss America to Reno, and she's still going 30 years after that first start, and she is still one of the more competitive races around

name: Zane Adams
date: 07/04/00
email: Zatexdp@aol.com

nominee: Tsunami

nomination: Tsunami was just palin Cool. Not as radical as the Pond Racer but still a very creative attepmt to make something new.

name: Steve Hill
date: 06/28/00
email: s2h@aol.com
location: New Mexico
nominee: Jon Sharp

nomination: Jon's total domination of Formula One for the past 9 years proves he deserves to be in the Hall of Fame. He has introduced many new concepts to the sport and has vastly raised the state-of-the-a

name: Ken Reed
date: 06/25/00
email:
location: Idaho
nominee: John Stead

nomination: It would be difficult to argue with the fact that modern air racing would not exist apart from the vision and efforts of John Stead. Although seemingly never really popular with the racers, and perhaps not the most likable of individuals, it's extremely doubtful that air racing would have ever risen from the ashes of Cleveland if Stead hadn't taken on the challenge of resurrecting the event. For that I think all of us fans can be grateful.

name: Carl Burger
date: 06/15/00
email:

nominee: David Rose

nomination: I have learned that Mr Rose won the Reno gold race in an aircraft he designed, built and piloted himself. It occures to me that this is an extra ordinary accomplishment. Surely a number have built or modified there aircraft; and maybe some have had a hand in the design work; but if my information in correct Mr. Rose did all the design work on a unique airplane which he then built and flew to a gold win. Other than Mr. Sharp, who else in modern times has accomplished the same feat?

name: Tony Wright
date: 6/13/00
email: stinson2@juno.com
location: California
nominee: Ray Cote

nomination: Ray is and has been, of course, a Formula One champion at Reno many times and also at other race venues. He has been racing for nearly fifty years and continues to be a giver to the sport instead of a taker. He has not sought personal glory, but instead has supported the sport by his hard work in bringing himself and a highly competitive aircraft to nearly all air racing events ever scheduled in the last half century. His incredible racing skills (no one flies a lower course than Ray) are legendary.

name: William Robinson
date: 06/04/00
email: SuprBear61@hotmail.com
location: Wisconsin
nominee: John Penney

nomination: He is a good competitor, and is dedicated to the sport. I think will see alot from him for years to come.

name: Dick Siano
date: 6/1/00
email: imdick@eclipse.net
location: Flemington, NJ
nominee: Mira Slovak

nomination: Mira was the winner of the first Reno Race flying a Bearcat in 1964.

name: Lynn Lloyd
date: 05/10/00
email:
location: Georgetown, TX
nominee: Lefty Gardner

nomination: Hundreds of thousands of people have seen Lefty Gardner perform his flawless air show routine in his beautiful Lockheed P-38 called "White Lightning". Others have enjoyed the thrill of seeing his precise running of the pylons at Reno in the P-38 and P-51. However, I wonder how many know the background of this quiet, unassuming man; this marvelous gentleman. There are two groups of men in this century I believe to be the bravest produced by the United States. The first group encompasses those men who left England daily in long range B-24s and B-17s to fly deep into Germany, without fighter escort, to bomb the heart of German manufacturing facilities. They departed England knowing that up to 80% of them would not return - but they took off day after day anyway, knowing this may well be their last flight and their last day of life. Lefty Gardner belongs to this group, having commanded both B-24s and B-17s during these dark days of WWII. He is such an exceptionally nice man that I don't believe he even realizes he is a hero. He certainly is my hero and my nomination for the Air Racing Hall of Fame. I also need to say that my second group of bravest men in this century are those who were first over the ramps of the LSTs on D-Day. Any of us who have come after them would do well to show even a measure of the bravery required by these two groups of Americans when it comes our turn to protect and defend our country.

name: CURT HOUGHTON JR
date: 4/17/00
email:
location: EVERETT,WASHINGTON
nominee: DARRYL GREENAMYER

nomination: I THINK THAT THIS MAN HAS CONTRIBUTED MORE THEN WE KNOW TO AVIATON IN ALL ASPECTS OF THAT SMALL WORLD OF EXPERIMENTING WITH THE UNKNOWN. HE'S FLOWEN THEM ALL AND HAS REBUILT THINGS MOST PEOPLE WOULD'NT THINK OF! IT'S TO BAD HE CAN'T GET CONQUEST 1 OUT FOR A TURN OR TWO AROUND THE RACE COURSE. MAN!! WHAT A THING THAT WOULD BE!! IN REMEMBERANCE OF ONE WHO LOVED THE SPORT OF AIR RACING! BLUE SKIES FOREVERY,TO GARY LEVITZ

name: David Masters
date: 04/15/00
email: dmast46374@aol.com
location: Pacific Northwest U.S.A.
nominee: Bob Hoover

nomination: Though all the other pilots are great in thier own right, none carry the resume' nor the sheer talent as that of R.A."Bob" Hoover. I have been blessed with meeting him as well as viewing his performances at Reno many times. If I could ever be a fraction of the Pilot that he is, I would swear I had angels wings. A gentleman out of the cockpit as well as in, he truly is "the Pilots Pilot".

name: Jack DeLay
date: 04/14/00
email: Jdelay007@aol.com
location: California
nominee: Art Scholl

nomination: Thru his efforts as a college instructor to his employment as a stunt pilot, Art gave his all to aviation. I remember as a child in the early 60's everyone at Flabob airport got excited about the air races all due to Art's efforts. He is a well known air race and stunt personallity who deserves to be acknowledged. Thank You

name: Steve Lacker
date: 4/14/99
email:
location: Austin, TX
nominee: The Sanders family

nomination: It may seem odd to nominate a family to the hall of fame, but I really don't think I could separate the contributions of the individual Sanders. Together, they created and fly Dreadnought, a mainstay at Reno for nearly 20 years and probably the most profitable and reliable aircraft ever to run in the Gold Unlimited category. If the pictures and rumors coming out of their shop are any indication, they aren't done yet either.

name: Pat Marrs
date: //
email: Agent2Mars@aol.com
location: Reno Nevada
nominee: Mac McClain

nomination: For being a great pilot and also to a have vision along with Bruce Boland, pete law and ed browning to introduce the first griffon powered racer in the late and great Red Baron RB-51.Even after stepping down as the pilot of the baron McClain continued to race in the #17 Escape 1 P-51 and later in the mighty Jeannie #69 P-51.

name: Don Cochran
date: 04/11/00
email:
location: Placerville, CA
nominee: Darryl Greenamyer

nomination: As a kid, I will never forget the excitment this man provided for the early Reno Air Races. Conquest I was truly a marvel and a tribute to his abilities. There have been few that could fly a race like he could. He was ten years ahead of his time. He not only won races, but brought the piston aircraft speed record back to the United States. He still owns the low altitude absolute speed record in his "homebuilt" F-104. He was one of the all time greats and I would give anything to see him out on the race course again. I'll bet he hasn't lost anything.

name: Shawn Aro
date: 04/11/00
email: ShawnAreoaol.com
location: Fremont cal
nominee: Steve Hinton

nomination: I really enjoyed steve racing i rember him racing in the red baron at Mojave in 1979 he was really awsolm he was one of the faster racers there .when he won he pulled of the course he did a victory roll in the red baron.

name: James Grant
date: 04/11/00
email: ebonygrove@aol.com
location:
nominee: BOB HOOVER

nomination: HE WAS THE GUARDIAN ANGEL FOR SO MANY YEARS TO THOSE IN EMERGENCIES. WITH OUT HIM THE SAFETY RECORD AT RENO MIGHT READ DIFFERENT

name: Gordie Spruyt
date: 4/11/00
email: gspruyt@hotmail.com
location: Vancouver
nominee: Steve Wittman

nomination: He may not have won, but he was capable. Only using old parts that he could afford, he was always a contender in the Thompson. He did it all - Hardly Ableson, Bonzo in the Thompson, Little Bonzo in the GOodyear/F1 class, and the V-Witt for Formula Vee. His planes are still being raced.

name: Leo Smiley
date: 04/11/00
email: smile4us@pacbell.net
location: Vacaville, California
nominee: Lefty Gardner

nomination: The sound and site of White Lightnin', Lefty's beautiful airshows and low line around the course always give me chills and bring a tear.

name: Juan A. Valentin
date: 4/10/00
email: titoplane@hotmail.com
location: Puerto Rico
nominee: Skip Holm -STILLETO

nomination: What a hot rod that plane was. Skip was a master fliying that plane. J.A VALENTIN

name: Brad Haskin
date: 4/10/00
email: brad.haskin@cardhealth.com
location: Seattle, WA
nominee: Jimmy Doolittle

nomination: At a time when aviation and air racing were still emerging from their cocoons, "real" aviators like Jimmy Doolittle were at the forefront of everything the aviaton world takes for granted today. Doolittle is the only person to ever win the "big three" air races that really mattered in a time when air racing was literally front page news, and as big of a "national" sporting event as this country ever had. In a period of less than 10 years, Doolittle won the Schneider Trophy race in an Army seaplane, the Bendix cross country race in the Laird Super-Solution, and the Thompson closed course race in the R-1 Gee Bee....all before he ever gained fame for leading the Tokyo raid in WWII. He may not have had the flashy panache' of Roscoe Turner, or the jolly charisma of a Cook Cleland. He may not have the win totals of a Greenamyer, Shelton, or Destefani. He may not have the foresight and creativity of a Jimmy Weddell, Keith Ryder, or a Bruce Boland. But when you think of what the definition of a REAL air race pioneer and pilot are, Doolittle is the man. If he's not at the top of everyone's list, then maybe we all need to go back and get a little refresher as to where modern day air racing at Reno came from. Go back to the roots.
