What can be said about a guy racing an airplane that normally isn’t considered "competitive," a guy who improves his qualifying speed from his first showing in 1999 at 133.89 MPH to his 2003 speed of 179.35 MPH?
He’s a RACER, that’s what!
We met Biplane Racer, Rich Beardsley at the 1999 "Rookie School" when he first showed up with his Smith Mini for pilot qualification training. Since that time, Rich has not only improved his airplane with a fully enclosed canopy and turtledeck, along with a much improved engine and other Aero mods. Rich has improved his racing skills, moving on from being a trainee, to being a trainer of prospective Biplane racers.
The Biplane Racing Division is an extremely competitive class, and one that bears watching over the next few years. Many innovative designs, created within the rules currently in place, are bringing some very interesting new airplanes into competition, as well as modified "stockers" as is Beardsley’s Rich’s Brew, which we now call a "Smith Maxi" in deference to his many modifications to the original design.
