"Flamand"

This week we feature another image from AAFO's "French Connection," Dominique Thirot. Each year, Dominique takes time from his busy schedule as a working software engineer to visit several of the major air shows held in Europe. The photos provided from these excurisions allow us to bring you some of the more unusual airplanes from around the world; this week, we take a look at a Dassault "Flamand." (flamingo)

Powered by two Renault inverted, air-cooled V-12 engines, the airplane is based on a series of designs by Marcel Dassault. Released in several variants, the "Flamand" was used by the French Air Force for a variety of roles, from training, to transport. This model with glazed nose section, appears to be a MD-311. 325 "Flamand" aircraft were built and remained in service until the late 70's.

specifications:

  • top speed - 236 MPH

  • cruise speed - 192 MPH

  • range - 794 miles

  • service ceiling - 26,246 feet
