"Air Bear"

When John Penney flew into the Nellis Air Show in Lyle Shelton's Rare Bear last October, Air Racing history was being written in real time. Not only did John fly to Las Vegas to participate in the first of a series of demonstration Air Races held at Nellis AFB, he flew the Rare Bear for the first time in over three years!

They both looked good in the air again!

The airplane flew again, in large part, due to the many "Fan Sponsor" contributions made via the Rare Bear Web Site "Rare Bear Wear" giftshop and the "Fan Sponsor Club" created by Sharon Coates and the Rare Bear Air Race Team. The airplane flew and John Penney flew her well to the delight of the thousands of new Air Race fans who attended the annual United States Air Force "Aviation Nation" or, more commonly known as "The Nellis Air Show".

The airplane flew but the job of getting her in top shape for Reno continues in a little hangar located at the Reno Stead Airport. Much of the work being done on Lyle Shelton's Rare Bear, by her new team, are maintenance and modifications that have been needed on this very Rare Bear for many years. All of the work currently being done is completely volunteer by the crew, many of whom are located at Reno. These men and women are going beyond being "volunteers", they are not only volunteering their time, much of the day-to-day, "nickel and dime" funding needed by the team is coming out of their pockets.

We've been a bit behind here at AAFO.COM lately in updating the website, and this page, due to our own need to obtain day-to-day funding which necessitated our involvement in several other projects that would bring in some much needed help in that area. Well, we're apparently not alone!

Being on the mailing list for this great team, due to managing their website for them, we recently became aware of a request by the team members to each other to dig deeper. Funding is needed for items necessary to get the Rare Bear in top shape for flight testing, scheduled for this Spring at Stead and Race Fans... They need our help!

A special new "product" listing has been added to the "Rare Bear Wear" gift shop at http://www.rarebear.com/ it is located in the "Fan Sponsor" section of the shop. In this new listing you can make a donation to the efforts of this Great Air Race Team! Be a part of the crew.. dig in, give a dollar, or twenty or five or more, whatever you can afford.. Now is the time... they need our help!

Of further interest to those of you who frequent this page for our "weekly" downloadable wallpaper, you will note that we have changed our image format, as well as removed the 1600x1200 pixel version of the POTW. In order to continue to grow this site, and obtain funding to replace the photo equipment lost by AAFO.COM when our Reno correspondent left us, and so that we might enable a new Reno contact to come on board at AAFO.COM with that replacement hardware in his or her hands; we are attempting to sell prints of various photos shown on AAFO.COM in our many features. We have discovered that the large size POTW photos were quite well good enough for home prints to be made. We need everyone's cooperation to keep this site growing.. Print sales will be, hopefully, a large part of that process. We hope those of you who run your desktop at the higher settings will understand our need to no longer offer this size.
