"A Purple Bear"
Neal Nurmi takes us back a few years with this September 16, 1981 shot of The Rare Bear on the ramp at Reno, Nevada. This would not be a good year for Lyle Shelton and the Rare Bear Air Race team.
Turning in a sixth place 416.037 MPH qualifying run the day before this picture was taken, Lyle would go on to win Friday's six lap Gold Heat 1 at 416.720 MPH, but that would be the end of his luck for this year at Reno.
Saturday's Gold Heat 2, saw Lyle pull out with a burned piston during lap two of the six lap event, putting Lyle into the Bronze for Sunday's finals. Lyle would fare no better on Sunday after another burned piston forced him out of the race after only 4 laps.
Seven years later, Lyle, his Rare Bear and the Rare Bear Air Race team would begin a winning streak that would see them win the Gold five times out of seven races at Reno, with four wins in a row on Sunday. They had found their stride!
