"Home Town Hero"
A hero to his home town of Tulelake, California, as well as many Reno Air Race fans, Nick Macy is one of the fastest of the fast who call the Klamath Basin area "home." Last year, Nick hoped to further the cause of National recognition for the plight of the Klamath agricultural community and the water rights issues that have plagued that area for several years by bringing home a third T-6/SNJ championship. In this photo, provided by Klamath Falls Herald And News reporter, Naomi West, we see Macy during his Friday the 13th of September, 2002 T-6 Heat 2A battle with Tom Campau.
This particular "Friday the 13th" was not a lucky one for Mr. Macy.
Though Macy had the lead at the beginning of this race, Campau, who went on to win the Championship during Sunday's final event, eventually passed Macy winning the Heat Race by less than one mile per hour.
With the Federal EPA rethinking its policy of holding back water needed by the agricultural community, which is home to several Air Racing families, the Klamath Basin is now back to farming and we look to see Nick going at it once again in his sleek, black "Six Cat" T-6, Race#6 at Reno 2003.
