"Gold Furias"
One of the most creative people and valuable asset to Air Racing is Furias Air Racing Team's Co-Owner, Bill Rogers. From the first time he went to Reno as a young man, Rogers was bitten with the bug, he is TRULY a racer inside and out!
From the day Bill's team acquired the late Lloyd Hamilton's "Super Sea Fury," they have worked to improve their chances at the brass ring. This year, with a new pilot, some reworked sheet metal and the determination of a truly inspired race team, something special happened... One look at the flanks of this racer in the photo above speaks volumes of what this team has done with this airplane.
The airplane simply looked better and sounded better than we've ever heard it. Just taking off, the checkered nosed R-4360 powered "Super Sea Fury" even sounded more aggressive.
New pilot Gary Hubler's 445.420 MPH qualifying effort was good for a solid third place, earning the team the day off on Thursday. (the top five qualifying positions do not race on Thursday) To say that The Rogers-Stolzer Furias Air Racing team were in good spirits at the annual ,post-qualifying, Wednesday evening "Warlock Party" would be a vast understatement! Furias was, once again, a Gold Racer!
Hubler finished the week just seven seconds behind our POTW feature airplane for last week, coming in a solid fifth place with 439.944 MPH written into the history books for the year.
