"Flyin-Lo"

One of our great disappointments this year was not getting to see the Biplanes mix it up. One of the racing groups at Reno who never seem to get their fair share of the attention, this class is as hotly competitive as any racing group in the world.

Seemingly benign in their outward appearance, these little airplanes are raced in the 200 mph region and their pilots are never satisfied with "fast enough."

In this exciting photo, provided by Jeffrey Lo flying in his modified Pitts Special Race #6 "Miss Dianne," we get a "bird's eye view" from his wing mounted camera as he takes aim on Mike Taylor, also in a Pitts, during an early week practice/qualifying session this year.

Jeff's airplane sports many modifications, including a custom built cowl and low drag canopy. Powered by a Lycoming IO-360 specially built by Kenny Tunnel at LyCon rebuilders and a racing propeller from US Propeller, Jeff's airplane carried him to a win in the Bronze final race in 1999 and a second place finish in the Silver final at Reno 2000.

With many of the competitors in this racing group ready to test modifications made over last year's off season, Tuesday's tragedy in New York and Washington DC stopped all racing for the week, leaving fans and racers to wait another year to "see what she'll do."
