"Bear-In-The-Air"
Nellis 2002, "Aviation Nation" AirShow now enters the history of Air Racing as the first demonstration Air Race held on a United Air Force Base in the modern history of the sport. The event also marked another first, the first time that Lyle Shelton's Rare Bear has flown since 1999 and we're here to tell ya.. Airplane, owner, pilot and crew all looked and sounded GREAT!
The October 5-6 event, held at the US Air Force's Air Combat Command base at Las Vegas, Nevada, also marked the first step in the effort to bring Air Racing to the desert resort city located on the southern tip of the state. Detailed plans for the future of the sport in the area are not yet publicly released but we can tell you that we drove to the proposed site and it looks very promising indeed!
This week's shot, taken by AAFO.COM editor/publisher Wayne Sagar could not have been possible without the very generous offer by aviation photographer Eric Hildebrandt for our ride-along on the B-25 photoship "Lady Luck." Due to being shot through Plexiglas, the quality of the image is not quite up to our normal POTW standards but... Seeing this great airplane in the sky again, particularly in this format, beckoned us to put her up to allow you to decorate your desktop with this amazing Raceplane!
With a new team running the operations out of the new "Bear Cave" at the Reno Stead Airport and a new venue for the sport gaining momentum, "New Faces - New Races" might well be the "buzzword" for the 2002 Nellis Air Show as well as for the future of "The World's Fastest Motorsport."
Stay tuned for more photos and information on this on-going story!
