"Legacy"

Starting in only the second year of the modern era of Air Racing, Darryl Greenamyer set the bar for all who followed. Winning an unprecedented seven National Championships in the Unlimited Division of the sport between 1965 and 1977, Greenamyer became the man to beat. His winning legacy continues today.

Setting the Sport Division course on fire with his record setting 347.774 MPH qualifying lap, Darryl showed his hand early in the week as the one to beat for the 2002 Sport Championship. Greenamyer didn't have it all easy, however, as Heat Racing began for the week at Reno 2002. Darryl showed an interesting race strategy on Thursday as he held back for much of Heat 1A, pouring on the power at mid race, Greenamyer in his absolutely howling Lancair Legacy passed John Parker flying the American Air Racing Thunder Mustang, only to be penalized for low flying, bringing his first place finish down to a third behind Parker and Dave Morss, flying another Legacy.

Laying back again early during Sport Heat 2A on Friday, Greenamyer was again gaining on Parker when the race was red flagged due to the tragic crash of Tommy Rose just prior to completing enough laps to make the race official. Had sufficient laps been logged during this race prior to the red flag, Darryl might well have lost the number one slot to Parker again.

During Saturday's Sport Heat 3A, Darryl showed that he had learned his "lesson" after narrowly missing losing the prior day's race, there would be no more laying back. Greenamyer came on strong for the entire race this time out and finished a strong first at 335.984 MPH.

Sunday completed a week of "close calls" for Greenamyer when during the Sport Division final race, he cut pylon six during lap two bringing him perilously close to handing the race to the very clean flying John Parker.

With the 2002 Sport trophy sitting on his mantle, will Darryl Greenamyer continue with a similar dominance to his early Unlimited racing career? Only time will tell, but in the very dynamic Sport Division, much can happen during the long off season. Some have predicted that the growing speeds of this relatively young racing division will someday eclipse those of the big Unlimited birds... of course, only time will tell the final chapter of this tale... but fans of Air Racing are undoubtedly going to be treated to ever increasing speeds as the fertile competitive minds of this sport continue their quest for the coveted gold!

This week's photo was handed in by Naomi West, who was shooting with AAFO's number two Nikon D-1 Digital SLR. This was Ms. West's first real experience with a high end camera shooting in the very difficult high speed sport of Air Racing, having done this myself for several years, all I can say is LOOK OUT! This woman can track an airplane! Watch for much more imagery from Naomi "Griffon Girl" West in an upcoming pictorial feature on AAFO.COM.
