"Nailed It"

Those of us who partake in the "adventure" of Aviation Photography, will recognize this picture as one of those that are in the realm of the nearly impossible to obtain. Catching the shock wave that is produced as an airplane approaches the sound barrier is not only difficult, it is very rare to see it when everything is "right" for a great photo.

While AAFO.COM reader Gregg Stansbery was visiting the Pensacola Beach AirShow on July 12, 2002, not only was he in the right place to capture this amazing photo, the conditions were "just right" for the shot. As USAF B1B, 85-0064, from the 127th BS/184th BW, Kansas ANG made its high speed pass, not only were the atmospheric conditions "right" for the shot, Gregg had the added benefit of a sunny sky to aid in capturing this moment for history.

Speaking as someone who has tried on numerous occasions to get this sort of shot, only to be foiled by either timing, lighting, or just plain fumble fingers... I can say that Gregg definitely "Nailed It" when he pressed the shutter on July 12, 2002!

A special thanks to Gregg Stansbery for taking the time to submit this photo for selection as Picture Of The Week on AAFO.COM!
