"Air 2 Air Taz"
Winning the The National Championship Air Races would be the ultimate goal of anyone who enters into the fray at the annual festival of speed held at the high desert community of Reno, Nevada. But winning is not always everything.
One of the most interesting entries to be seen at Reno in "recent" years is the "Super Sea Fury" Race 10, Critical Mass. Owned and flown by Auburn, California's Tom Dwelle, this pilot and his talented crew bring a high level of excitement to the show at Reno just by being there.
Powered by a highly modified 18 cylinder, Wright R-3350 engine modeled after the famous "Rare Bear" powerplant, this "red," white and black Sea Fury looks more like a purebred raceplane than anything that ever came out of the Hawker Aircraft plant. The airplane brings something special to the event at Reno just by being there.
Fans of the sport have long wondered just how well this team would do when all the "ducks were in a row" for them and this year seemed that it might just be the year we'd see them let the dogs out. It was not to be. A landing gear failure early in the week at Reno 2002 ended the Critical Mass Air Race Team's run for the gold... for this year.
Never a team to sit still when fate throws adversity their way, the "CMART" are hard at it at their home base and the airplane will be back and better than before for Reno 2003. These photos, taken this year during the Grass Valley Air Show show just how good this airplane looks in the air, up close and personal!
Watch for this exciting Air Race team to return with a vengeance as they continue their quest for the gold in the grand sport of Air Racing!
