"Just a Guy"
"I'm just a guy with a screwdriver in his pocket"
Bill Kerchenfaut, if you try to laud praise on this man, more than likely, the comment he most often ascribes to himself, noted above, will be his response to you. Known within the sport of Air Racing as "The Crew Chief's Crew Chief" Bill Kerchenfaut has brought far more to the sport than even this title might suggest.
"The man with hands of gold" "Kerch" as he is known to many, has had more to do with bringing Air Racing to the level we enjoy today than perhaps any other single person in the history of the sport. Not only the "Crew Chief" or "Team Manager," as he likes to be known, for current National champion, Dago Red Air Racing, "Kerch" serves as willing mentor and helper to any team, in any class, who might need to tap his years of experience.
In this week's photo, submitted by Biplane Racer, Jeffrey Lo ( http://flyin-lo.com/ ) we find "Kerch" in a quiet moment as his airplane, Dago Red, piloted by Skip Holm, taxis in from an early morning test run on Saturday, September 14, 2002, at the Reno National Championship Air Races.
"Just a guy"... indeed, the champion of the sport of Air Racing.
