The fastest airplanes tend to take off slowly, because they have "long" props and take a while to get up to speed. Slower airplanes tend to use a more takeoff oriented prop, and leap off the ground into the lead. This makes for great racing with lots of passing as the faster racers gradually get up to racing speed and zoom past the rabbits. The following photo sequence, shot by Birgitta Nurmi on Saturday of Reno 99, starts with the Cassutts of Robert Jones (#57) and Texan Carl Swenson (#17) just lifting off the runway...
