In his half century of flying everything from Navy Corsairs to "Spirit of St Louis" replicas to "Dago Red" to 500 pound formula 1s, Ray Cote has accumulated something over 36,000 flight hours. His Air Racing career started back in the 1960s, when he acquired the original "Shoestring", Race #16. This airplane, built in the 1940s, had had a solid career to that point, but in Ray’s hands gained 60 miles an hour and eight consecutive (nine in all) Reno victories before being retired to a museum in 1982. Here we have Ray doing an engine run-up at Reno 1977.
