The camera I use, the Nikon N70, has a reasonably good spot metering mode. In this photo, Jimmy is flying by close enough that the spot metering works for me. The airplane is fairly well exposed. (even I get lucky once in a while)

Focusing in these situations is absolutely difficult at best! Consider that Jimmy Leeward is travelling in excess of 480mph, at a distance from me of no more than 100-200 feet… Following the aircraft, attempting to match it's speed with camera movement to get a sharp image and trying to focus on the subject aircraft as it's moving for the sharpest view possible. I have to admit, I rarely get it all to come together at the same moment, this shot is a fair example of this.. Reasonably good exposure... "slightly" less than perfect focus.
