Saint
Louis Escadrille's fourth WW1 fly-in is ON Please come if you can and bring your WW1 stuff with you (aircraft / reenacting) if you can . Please help spread the word! Call it "keeping a stiff upper lip". Call it "refusing to comply with terrorism". Call it "Missouri mule ass 'show me' attitude". But the event is a GO at its originally scheduled place and time. Uncle Bob (Bob Rockford) rallied the many local members of the Saint Louis Escadrille (SLE) who showed up for the emergency meeting today at 2pm, and all voted to proceed. Bob also proposed that all profit from this year's fly-in be donated to the on going victims/recovery effort in NY, DC, and PA concerning 09/11/2001. This too, passed unanimously. However, because of the terrorism of 09/11/2001 there have been six (6) adjustments. They are listed at the bottom of this message. SLE is expecting a large turn-out by the general public. Over 2,500 flyers have been personally passed out between 08/29 and 09/11. Creve Coeur Camera's photo contest is still a GO for this event!!! First prize is an Olympus D-490 digital camera (a $499 value), second prize is a pair of Minolta Activa Compact Zoom Binoculars (a $199 value), and third prize is a year's worth of fee film and processing * (over a $179 value). See contest rules at the bottom of this message. EAA Chapter 32 ( www.eaa32.org ) is holding off their Young Eagles decision until 6pm on 09/26. If by Wednesday the FAA has rescinded "enhanced class B" air space, then they WILL fly their Young Eagles program from the north end of the flight-line on Saturday 09/29 from 10am to 3pm (this is what EAA32 reported to SLE on 09/23 - check with 32 directly for possible changes). Young Eagles is the EAA's program to give one million (or is it a billion?) children (ages 8 to 17 ?) a free airplane ride by the centennial of man's first powered flight by the Wright Brothers. Contact 32 directly for ALL Young Eagle questions. The event a GO as originally scheduled. Saint Louis Escadrille's THE GREAT WAR FLY-IN & CONCOURSE Saturday, September 29 and Sunday, September 30 9am to 4pm outdoors along the main runway of CREVE COEUR AIRPORT (1HO) 3127 Creve Coeur Mill Road Saint Louis, MO 63146 Admission is free but there is a daily $5 per vehicle parking fee. Contact phone number is: 314-638-1550, but best communication is by email to killianoneal@msn.com If you would like a PDF of the event's 8.5"x14" flyer (about 800k in size) please click link at bottom of page. Also, thanks to John Zapp of AeroVents for getting SLE's front page of its home site back onto the internet will SLE fights problems with its down web site. You can visit John's help at to https://AeroVents.com/Aerodrome . On even a very happier note, after the 2pm meeting, Don Jonas fired up his VW engine in his Nieuport 11 for the first. A sticky choke prevented startup on the first try, but in 15 minutes Bob Rockford had identified and fixed problem. Many separate engine starts and stops were ran in all power settings along with slow taxiing by Don and some high speed taxiing by Bob. All together 1.6 hours of time was put on the engine this afternoon. SIX (6) ADJUSTMENTS TO ORIGINAL EVENT: #1.) All profit from this year's fly-in will be donated to the on going victims/recovery effort in NY, DC, and PA. #2.) The "fly-in" is now a "static" display because no WW1er can fly to -or- at Creve Coeur Airport. This is because of the FAA's new temporary restriction called "enhanced class B" air space. Creve Coeur Airport (1HO) sits under the 'class B' air space of Lambert International Airport. The FAA's "enhanced class B" means no VFR flying under/through/over Lambert in a 30 circle. WW1 aircraft and most general aviation is VFR. This has put a major stop on general aviation and its business in the greater metro area. Taxiing is allowed and if the "enhanced class B" is rescinded then there will be flying. But no local FAA official that SLE met with knew if/when that might be. #3.) Because WW1ers cannot fly in to Creve Coeur and other events related to the tragedy of 09/11/2001, it is expected that there will be a reduction in attendance of volunteers across all categories; aircraft, antique automobiles, exhibitors, vendors, and reenactors. SLE completely understands this and supports the decision each volunteer has to make in wake of the current situation. #4.) Friday, September 28, was originally scheduled as a work/setup time in the morning and a "media day" in the afternoon. It is now just a work/setup day. The Friday "media day" has been canceled. Media personal are encouraged to attend the event Saturday midmorning / noon for best event coverage. #5.) There will be no aero competitions this year, even if the FAA rescinds "enhanced class B". #6.) Free food for volunteers is now in question. This is because the church youth group from Kansas City, which has manned the grill and made the food for the last three years, may not be able to attend this year. Some parents have concerns about their children traveling at this time. The Pastor is to meet with the parents of the youth group sometime this week. If the youth group does not come, then SLE will have no food that it can give freely to volunteers and SLE will have no awards banquet for participants. SLE is very sorry about the "food" situation but is powerless in this matter. We hope you understand the parents' concerns should they choose not to allow their teenagers to come to Saint Louis. CREVE COEUR CAMERA PHOTO CONTEST RULES: ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Creve Coeur Camera will be sole judge for choosing winning pictures. SLE is not involved in selection process or even in supplying selection criteria, it is Creve Coeur Camera's call alone. Take pictures at THE GREAT WAR FLY-IN & CONCOURSE (September 29 and/or 30, 2001) and have your pictures developed at any Creve Coeur Camera location by October 15, 2001 and fill out the entry blank when you pick up your developing. Winners will be selected and notified by October 31, 2001. *One roll of film and processing per month. |
