As the formation
tightens, in my headset I can hear race control
talking to the crowd and our flight as he hands
the formation and announcing duties for the start
over to the pace plane pilot, Gene McNeely.
"Ok let's pick up the speed guys" said
McNeely as we now really begin going downhill to
the start.
At this moment, after
spending the entire flight with my eye to the
viewfinder, I have absolutely no idea where we
are in relation to the field and just as the
pilots on my right are fixated on the airplane
beside them, I am fixated on them, determined to
make the best of this wonderful opportunity to
share this experience via my camera.
As the formation points
downward, the feeling of weight changes as your
body lightens in the seat, the air of excitement
builds in all of us in this flight as we head for
the beginning of the race. Though quite damp, the
atmosphere is electric!
