Reno Air Race officials
announced at the recently concluded Class
Presidents Meeting that they are
boosting the purse for the swift
kit-builts by $20,000.00 to achieve a
prize of $100,000.00 at this
Septembers running of the National
Championship Air Races. The increase was
attributed to the burgeoning appeal and
fan base of these innovative aircraft.
Officials also noted the significant Race
sponsorship generated by the class which
has included Lancair, Audi, Aircraft
Spruce, Kitplanes Magazine, and Textron
Lycoming.
In addition to their
development support of Mike Jones
soon to be certified 10 580 engine and
the debut of John Sharps twin
turbocharged Nemesis NXT, Lycoming will
have an expanded presence on the Reno pit
midway this year.
Several new aircraft,
including an entry from Frank Taylor, the
original owner of Dago Red, will increase
competition at the sharp end of the Gold
Heat in 04.
Additional attention could
be drawn to the Class in 05. Reno
executives have asked that a survey be
made regarding the feasibility of adding
turbo prop powered kit-builts as a
separate division within the Sport Class
next year.
