Reno Air Racing: Lefty Gardner decides not to attend Reno '98

No Lightnin' At Reno '98

08/31/98 AAFO.COM UPDATE

It is with sad hearts that we report the following information about White Lightnin' and Lefty Gardner. We received this letter today which is addressed to all of Lefty's fans:

"In a meeting on Friday, August 28th, the Thunder & Lightnin' Gang and friends met in Austin, Texas to review the ongoing negotiations with RARA over the past several months for the aerobatic performance of White Lightnin' at the September races.

It was decided with deep regrets and apologies for any inconveniences to 'White Lightnin' fans to withdraw from racing or aerobatic performances at the September races. This decision was reached due to months of fruitless attempts to negotiate with RARA.

This decision is made with heavy hearts because of all the support given to "White Lightnin' for this event -- so thanks to all of you -- especially the wonderful folks at the Comstock Hotel who so generously offered accommodations for the Gang and to Scott Motors for transportation. We would also like to thank all the super folks who have given us help, encouragement and support over the past 30 or so years.

We wish RARA all the best for a successful event this year.

Lefty"

Not much more can be said about this latest development. "A sad ending to this story" seems woefully inadequate to describe our feelings in this regard. Reno just won't be the same.
