Stepping inside this airplane I have come to know so well since first writing about her travel north several years ago, you are greeted by the control panel for the hydraulic engineers. This airplane had several major design problems to cconquer; not the least of which was: "how do you power the controls for such a massive machine?" The answer was, of course, what is still used to this day... pressurized oil working boosted control surface actuators. Every time you step into a modern airliner, you are benefiting from the engineering work of Howard Hughes and his dedicated team during the waning years of World War II.
