Reno 2000: The Week in Pictures
The dust storm created by David Anders spectacular Mayday mishap in Race 25, the "Eggstra Special," which had qualified in the pole position at 331.902 mph. A gust of wind helped to flip Race 25 during its attempted emergency landing, causing major damage to the propeller, wings, fuselage and tail. Anders escaped with minor injuries, though he was trapped upside down in the aircraft until it could be righted by Crash Rescue.

The accident had an undeniable impact on the outcome of the major Sport Division races over the race weekend, including Sunday's Gold event, which was won by the Lancair Team. Anders was considered a favorite this year to win the Sport Gold. Instead, the Lancair and Papa 51 factories took home victories in this year's races, while Anders returned home with a severely damaged entry. Whether the aircraft is salvageable or not is an unknown.
