"Old - Ancient - New"

Aha, the great American air show! You'll find one in many communities nearly every weekend of the summer months; in many cases, for months before and after the summer months! Airshows continue to be one of the most popular outdoor family activities in this great country.

The 19th annual Oregon International Air Show was but one of these summer shows held across America. This show has had a perfect safety record throughout its history... This weekend, the perfect record came to an end at nearly the end of the show when Bob Guilford crashed in his Hawker Hunter vintage fighter jet as he departed the show early.

A more beautiful setting for this type of event could hardly be found anywhere on the planet. This week's shot is an example of this. In the background, the ancient volcano that is Mt. St Helens, in the foreground, Astronaut Bill Anders idles his WWII P-51 Mustang, waiting for his clearance by the show airbosses to fly the heritage flight along with the A-10. In the middle ground sits one of the reasons this show may not go onto its 20th annual season. Along with residential areas that have built up in the area, Intel has a plant bordering the airport.

A "town hall" meeting held after the show had a vote of 80 votes positive, 20 votes negative for keeping the show going. The decision to have a 2007 Oregon International Air Show at the Hillsboro location has yet to be decided.
